Niamey, Niger, September 14, 2022 – Ara Pacis Initiatives for Peace, together with the NOOR Foundation of the First Lady of Niger and haute couture jewelry designer Alexandra Mor, announce the launch of the JEWELS OF THE SAHEL project.

The visit of Ara Pacis President Maria Nicoletta Gaida to Niamey, Niger, has just concluded, where she, along with internationally renowned jewelry designer Alexandra Mor, was hosted by First Lady Khadijia Bazoum, President of Ara Pacis’s partner foundation, NOOR. The visit marked the launch of JEWELS OF THE SAHEL, a unique project aimed at the development of Tuareg artisans in the Sahel-Saharan region of Niger

The project will be inaugurated with a capsule collection of haute jewelry by Alexandra Mor. The collection, exceptionally produced outside her New York studio, will be presented alongside the launch of a book documenting this journey and ushering in a new era for Niger’s creative community. Set to launch in New York in the spring of 2023, the collection draws inspiration from centuries of heritage, knowledge, and unique craftsmanship of the Tuareg people from the Sahara and Sahel regions.

The project is designed to support and empower the Tuareg artisan community to reclaim their craft and work, preserving their culture and lost skills by developing updated professional production and manufacturing capabilities, entrepreneurial skills, and access to currently unavailable equipment and facilities.

The collection will serve as a springboard for a broader initiative by Ara Pacis in collaboration with the NOOR Foundation, focused on creating a Sahara Peace Hub, a center for artistic craftsmanship, music, and entrepreneurship in Niamey, the capital of the Sahel region. This initiative is born from the belief that in a context of economic hardship, fear, and insecurity, beauty, culture, and a new vision can be unprecedented vehicles of hope, development, progress, and peace.
